2010      An amendment to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), as part of the 2010 Patient Protection Act and Affordable Care Act (H.R.3590 SEC. 4207), signed into law by President Obama, imposes a national mandate requiring all employers subject to the FLSA to provide rest breaks and a private space to mothers who wish to express breast milk at work. Employers with fewer than 50 employees are not exempt from the requirements; however such employers may seek an exception under undue hardship if the requirements cause the employer significant difficulty or expense.

2008      NMC Executive Director, Amelia Psmythe was a finalist for the National Robert Wood Johnson Community Health Leader award.

2007      After 10 years of advocacy, the Rest Breaks for Breast Milk Expression (Oregon, 2007) passed as an employer mandate. Governor Kulongoski signs the Rest Breaks for Breast Milk Expression bill into law in May 8, 2007.

Diane Garrett, NMC Volunteer Lobbyist for the Rest Breaks for Breast Milk Expression law was awarded the statewide Governor’s Volunteer of the Year award and Governor Kulongoski yielded his chair to Ms. Diane Garrett.

2006      NMC was recognized as a regional winner of the Governor’s Volunteer Organization of the Year.

2005      The Rest Breaks for Breast Milk Expression law passed as an employer encouragement. Governor Kulongoski signs the Workplace Accommodation for Breastfeeding Mothers bill into law.

2004      NMC was designated one of 18 Community Demonstration Projects for the United States Dept. of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health, National Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign. Billboard and print ads were published from the National Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign and sponsored by the Office on Women’s Health and the Ad Council.
