Support for Moms

“Breastfeeding was an overwhelming and isolating experience until I called NMC.  The peer counselor I spoke to was kind, attentive, and knowledgeable.  I’m so grateful for this help. “  – Brittany N.

Do you need someone to talk with?

NMC peer counselors are here to support you. We offer telephone support to help you realize your breastfeeding goals through evidence based education and nonjudgmental encouragement.  Our goal is to provide you the information you need to make an informed decision about what is best for you, your baby, and your family. Here are just some of the things we can help you with:

  • feeding your newborn
  • weaning
  • introducing solids
  • supplementing
  • pumping
  • tandem nursing (nursing children of different ages at the same time)
  • returning to work
  • engorgement
  • changes to milk supply
  • help finding resources
  • referrals for discounted IBCLC (Lactation Consultant) visits
  • wanting to talk to another mom who has been there

Why do nursing mothers need support?

Support pageNMC peer counselors are experienced breastfeeding mothers themselves who have taken specialized training to support nursing mothers on the NMC phone lines. NMC volunteers are experienced, caring and understanding women who know first hand that breastfeeding takes patience and practice. We understand that nursing mothers do better when they receive the same loving attention they are giving to their babies. Support from friends and family, or even another mother who has nursed, can be as important as help from a doctor.

Recognizing that babies don’t pause for holidays, we try to keep help available throughout the year. NMC also has a small number of bilingual English-Spanish peer counselors available.
